The General Services Division is also responsible for overseeing the Special Deputy program. The Special Deputy program involves 21 reserve officers who volunteer their time to the Sheriff's Office for $1 a year, which classifies them as employees for Worker's Compensation Insurance purposes.
Special Deputies donate over 3,000 hours to the Sheriff's Office annually, performing various department functions, including public relations, crime prevention, and patrol activities. They are responsible for the Cedar River boat patrol that occurs annually Memorial Day through Labor Day. They also assist with providing law enforcement protection at RAGBRAI and the annual Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival.
