Deputy Sheriff Training

All new deputies are required to successfully complete the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Basic Training program within their first year of employment. This 16 week rigorous training program prepares recruits for their peace officer duties and responsibilities.

Since all Linn County deputies start their employment at the Correctional Center, they are also required to successfully complete a 40-hour Jail Basic Training within one year of employment.

Deputies assigned to the Correctional Center are required to complete 20 hours of annual in-service training. All other deputies require to complete 12 hours of in-service training. In-service training may include, but is not limited to:

  • Firearms
  • CPR
  • First Aid
  • Mandatory Reporter
    • Child abuse
    • Dependent adult abuse
  • Mental Health
  • Fair and Impartial Policing
  • Conducted Electronic Weapon
  • Blood-borne Pathogens
  • Hazardous Communications
