City of Fairfax
The City of Fairfax has called for a Special Election to be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 to fill the mayor vacancy term which ends in December 2023.
On election day, City of Fairfax voters will vote at the Fairfax City Hall which located at 300 80th Street Ct in Fairfax and will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
A sample ballot will be available after the withdrawal and objection deadline of Monday, April 10, 2023.
Important Dates and Items:
- Pre-registration for voter registration ends Monday, April 17, 2023 at 5 p.m. (PDF)
- Absentee ballot request forms (PDF) must be received in the office by Monday, April 17, 2023 at 5 p.m.
- Early in-person absentee voting for the special election will begin on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 and end at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2023.
- Absentee ballots MUST be received in our office or ballot drop box by the close of polls on election day to be considered for counting.
- Polling places will be open on election day from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The last day our office can receive an absentee ballot request form (PDF) is Monday, April 17, 2023 by 5 p.m.
Absentee ballots MUST be received in our office or ballot drop box by the close of polls on election day.
The deadline to request a satellite is Friday, March 31, 2023 by 5 p.m.
Requesting a satellite can be accomplished by gathering 100 signature on a petition form requesting a satellite at a location described on the petition form.
The City of Fairfax has called for a Special Election to be held on May 2, 2023, to fill the vacancy for the mayor’s remaining term which ends in December 2023.
The filing period ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2023. Candidate paperwork must be filed with the Linn County Elections Office located at 935 2nd Street SW in Cedar Rapids.
Ten (10) signatures are required to be on the ballot.

The mayor position will appear on the November 7, 2023, Regular City & School Election for a full two-year term.
