November 7, 2023: Regular City & School Elections
Regular City & School Elections
Elections will be held countywide for school board members, city councils (if any) and Kirkwood Community College Board of Trustees (if any).
On election day, voters will need to vote at their assigned polling place which will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sample ballots will be online once ballots are approved.
Important Dates and Items:
- Pre-registration for voter registration ends Monday, Monday October 23, 2023, at 5 p.m. (PDF)
- Absentee ballot request forms (PDF) must be received in the office by Monday, October 23, 2023, at 5 p.m.
- Early in-person absentee voting ends at 5 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2023.
- Absentee ballots MUST be received in our office or ballot drop box by the close of polls on election day to be considered for counting.
- Polling places will be open on election day from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The last day our office can receive an absentee ballot request forms (PDF) is Monday, October 23, 2023 by 5 p.m.
The first day our office can mail out absentee ballots is Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

Filing Period
The filing period for the November 7, 2023: Regular City & School Elections begins Monday, August 28, 2023 and ends at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
Signature Requirements to Run for Office (PDF)
City candidates MUST with the county auditor's office which is located at 935 2nd Street SW in Cedar Rapids. The only exception is for Walford candidates that will need to submit paperwork to the Benton County Auditor.
School board candidates need to submit paperwork to the appropriate school board secretary. Additional information about school board secretaries can be found here.
Kirkwood Community College Board of Trustee candidates must file with the Kirkwood Community College board secretary.
How do I run for School Board Elections?
School board elections in Linn County are non-partisan.
You must file an Affidavit of Candidacy and collect signatures on Nomination Petitions to run for school board in Linn County. Mark on your Nomination Petitions if you are running at large or in a district before you have people sign the petitions.
Community Colleges have special nomination petitions and are filed with the Community College Board Secretary. If you run for a community college district position, the signatures have to come from people who live in that district.

How do I run for City Elections?
City elections in Linn County are non-partisan and none of the cities in Linn County have a Primary Election.
The City of Cedar Rapids has a Runoff Election if the top candidate for an office doesn't get at least 50% of the votes (or 25% when two at-large seats are on the ballot).
You must file an Affidavit of Candidacy and collect signatures on Nomination Petitions to run for city office in Linn County. Mark on your Nomination Petitions if you are running at large or in a district before you have people sign the petitions. If you run for a district or ward position, the signatures have to come from people who live in that district or ward.
