Sex Offender Residency Requirements
The Iowa Sex Offender Registry became law on July 1, 1995 and is found in Chapter 692A Code of Iowa. On or after July 1, 1995, an individual who has been convicted or adjudicated of a criminal offense against a minor, sexual exploitation, or a sexually violent crime, or who was on probation, parole, work release status, or who was incarcerated on or after July 1, 1995 is required to register. If the offender moves out of state or county, the offender must register with the local sheriff’s office or law enforcement within five business days of moving to that area.
Implementation of the 2,000 foot rule is in effect. You can use the Sex Offender Registry Map to determine if an address is in compliance. If an address is within the purple zone, it is in violation of the 2,000 foot rule. You can also enter an address, in the "Find Address" field located near the top left of the map, to determine if it is in compliance or not.
In order to find out if an individual is on the sex offender registry, you must complete a Sex Offender Registry Request (PDF) and bring it to the Sheriff’s Office. You may also inquire, by either name or county, at the Iowa Sex Offender website.
