Civil Division

Responsibilities

The Civil Division of the Linn County Attorney's Office acts as legal counsel for elected officials and department heads as well as for various county boards and commissions. There are also statutory requirements to assist various state agencies such as the Iowa Department of Human Services. The office practices in many areas of law including:

  • Bankruptcy
  • Civil rights
  • Dependent adult abuse
  • Employment
  • Insurance
  • Post-conviction relief
  • Real estate
  • Tort liability (when the county gets sued)
  • Worker's compensation

No Public Legal Advice

The office cannot give legal advice or opinions to private citizens. If you have a legal issue involving Linn County it should be brought to the attention of the appropriate elected official or department head. For general legal assistance, you should seek advice from your own attorney.
