Road Closures & Restrictions

The Linn County Secondary Road Department closes roads for the safety of the traveling public during road projects, extreme weather events, etc. The road may be closed to through traffic or closed tight, with no access at all. Our department notifies public safety agencies so that they can adjust routes in the event of an emergency. Drivers who do not follow road closure signs are putting themselves and workers in danger. If drivers do not follow the road closure signs, they may be ticketed or invoiced for any damages caused.

Road Embargoes

Severe winter conditions may result in damage to county roads during thawing. Cold weather with deep frost does not combine for road stability and proper drainage. State law provides counties with the ability to limit vehicle weights for up to 90 days per year. Linn County uses this embargo ability to limit gross vehicle weight to 5 tons on rock roads and 10 tons on hard surfaced roads. The embargo is intended to reduce damage and make roads more useful.

Embargo Permit

If you need to haul on an embargoed road, you can apply for an Embargo Permit (PDF). The permit fee is $50.00 and is good for eight weeks. Haulers are required to provide proof of insurance and haulers are responsible for any damage done to the road. Requirement details are listed on the back of the permit.
