Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections [STI] (also known as sexually transmitted diseases [STD]) are a serious health issue that if left untreated, may lead to serious outcomes such as infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, cancer, increased pain and inflammation, loss of vision or hearing, or death. The most commonly contracted sexually transmitted infections in the United States are Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Human Papillomavirus [HPV], and Trichomoniasis. A majority of sexually transmitted infections are spread through direct sexual contact, and occur among individuals 15 to 24 years of age. For additional information about the connection between age and sexually transmitted infections see the CDC's, Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Young Americans.
