Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States, according to Ready.gov. Spring thaw and rain can mean an increased risk for flooding. Unincorporated Linn County has a history of flooding due to its location in the watersheds of both the Cedar and Wapsipinicon rivers.
A significant portion of land in Linn County is located within Special Flood Hazard Areas, which have a 1% or greater chance of flooding in any given year (previously referred to as the 100-year floodplain). Linn County Planning & Development or our Certified Flood Plain Manager can help residents determine if their property lies in a Special Flood Hazard Area.
If your property is susceptible to flooding, there are many flood damage reduction measures you can employ:
- Watertight seals can be applied to brick and block walls to protect against low-level flooding.
- Utilities such as heating and air-conditioning systems, water heaters, and other major appliances can be elevated to higher floors in the structure or on raised platforms.
- Temporary measures such as moving furniture and other valuables to higher floors or sandbagging exterior openings may also help.
- Elevating or relocating the entire structure may be a feasible option.
Properties prone to flooding should also be protected with flood insurance to cover the costs of any damages that may result from a flood. Flooding is not covered by a standard homeowner's insurance policy. A separate flood insurance policy is required to cover damages incurred by flooding.
Linn County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Ratings System (CRS) program allowing residents to receive up to a 15% discount on their flood insurance premiums. The County was accepted into the program in October 2012. Linn County successfully completed recertification in 2018, and Linn County’s CRS rating improved, increasing the discounts available.
