Adventure Day Dialogue

Saturday, February 4, 2023

Linn County Conservation will host a day of presenters at the Wickiup Hill Learning Center sharing tales and accounts of outdoor adventures. The event takes place Saturday, February 4 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. People can pop in any time or bring a sack lunch and stay for the day. “It is an opportunity to break up winter and cabin fever by hearing of some adventures firsthand by outdoor enthusiasts,” said Ryan Schlader, Community Outreach Specialist for Linn County Conservation. “Registration is not required for this event.” The Wickiup Hill Learning Center is located at 10260 Morris Hills Road, Toddville, Iowa.

Sessions for Adventure Day Dialogue include:

11 a.m.-noon Erika Billerbeck presents on her book, Wildland Sentinel. As a DNR Conservation Officer, Erika will share photos and stories from her experience as a female in a male dominated field.

Noon–1p.m. Wickiup Hill Learning Center Manager Kent Rector presents on the recent South San Juan Wilderness Trek, an outdoor leadership program that involved eight students from four local schools. Kent will detail the many benefits this backpacking trip provides for area youth.

1-1:45 p.m. Keynote Speaker Dave Hillman will take us along on his recent Missouri River Source to Sea Paddle: the journey of 3,700 miles, 13 states and 123 days. The adventure provided Dave a great number of stories and photos to share. Linn County Conservation naturalist Chuck Ungs will provide color commentary and wildlife identification.

1:45–2 p.m. Free popcorn and social break

2-2:45 p.m. Keynote Speaker - Part 2 Dave continues his amazing Missouri River Source recap with us (along with Chuck) followed by a few more stories from this adventure of a lifetime.

3-4 p.m. Linn County Conservation’s Project Planner Ted Doscher recaps a recent Wisconsin bikepacking adventure and the gear you may consider taking on a similar jaunt. Planning and route selection ideas will be detailed.
