[ARCHIVED] Linn County Public Health Reminds Rural Landowners of Open Burning Rules for Storm Debris

Open burning

Linn County reminds landowners that while open burning of organic storm debris is permissible outside of Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha, some restrictions still apply:

  • A landowner may only burn organic materials from their property. Only a municipal site operated by a local governmental entity may openly burn trees and tree trimmings originating from another property.
  • Other Linn County municipalities may have additional local restrictions more restrictive than Linn County rules.  Please check with your local officials before starting an open burn.
  • Never leave a fire unattended, especially overnight.
  • Cedar Rapids and Marion have declared a ban on all burning except for cooking.  This ban includes all recreational fires.

Please consider all options for storm debris removal including the drop off and pickup options previously announced by Linn County Board of Supervisors. Be mindful of neighbors who may have underlying health conditions where excessive outdoor smoke may be harmful to them.  Visit LinnCounty.org/storm for more information.
