COVID-19 Vaccine Information

Linn County Public Health continues to work with local vaccine partners to offer vaccine to community members. Through April 2, adults age 65 and older may schedule a vaccine appointment at the Linn County Harris Building public health clinic by calling 319-892-6097. Several vaccine providers are also scheduling appointments for adults 65 and older as well. Linn County is fortunate to have many health care providers, which can work directly with their patients to offer vaccine. Health care providers are trusted sources of accurate information, and can help to provide information to their patients about vaccinations.

Linn County Public Health is working with community partners to set up targeted vaccine clinics for vulnerable populations throughout the month of April. These targeted clinics will focus on offering vaccine to vulnerable populations. Identified vulnerable populations include individuals who experience barriers to accessing vaccine due to no or limited access to care; are hesitant to receive vaccine; experience transportation, technology, or language barriers; experience health inequities; or are disproportionately impacted by social determinants of health. The COVID-19 Vulnerable Populations Workgroup has provided feedback to inform these targeted clinics. The workgroup includes members and trusted people that work closely with vulnerable populations. While the first meeting of this group was held on February 3, 2021, planning for offering vaccine to identified groups began in January. Linn County Public Health is holding targeted clinics to identified vulnerable populations as it is an essential service of public health to ensure all community members have access to services and resources.  Linn County Public Health serves as a safety net provider to ensure equity in access to care and preventative services, which includes vaccination. Vaccine supply is still limited. Linn County Public Health will continue to serve vulnerable populations and advocate for appropriate vaccination efforts.

In anticipation of vaccine supply increasing, Linn County Public Health continues to plan for large scale, public clinics for eligible populations in addition to current methods of vaccine distribution. It will be important to offer a variety of methods for people to receive vaccine, as there is not one option that is best for everyone.

Linn County Public Health expects to receive additional information from the Iowa Department of Public Health the week of March 29th regarding expanded eligibility to all Iowans on April 5.

Phase 1B

As of March 14, all Phase 1B populations in Linn County are eligible for vaccine. However, the demand for vaccine is greater than the supply, so not everyone in Phase 1B will be able to get vaccine right away.

Of vaccine allocated to Linn County through Linn County Public Health, 80% will be assigned to adults 65 and older, individuals with disabilities and their caretakers, and individuals age 16 to 64 with underlying conditions. The remaining 20% of vaccine will be assigned to Phase 1A and Phase 1B Tier 1-5 populations, in priority order. This allocation strategy for vaccine will remain in place as supply increases. Linn County will receive approximately 4,800 doses the week of March 29.
