[ARCHIVED] Grow Solar Linn + Johnson Counties Reaches Second Goal

Grow Solar Logo

The Grow Solar Linn + Johnson Counties program has met its second goal of 150 collective kilowatts (kW), resulting in a larger discount to all participants. The limited-time program gives people access to solar education and competitive prices for solar installations on residential and commercial properties through volume purchasing.

Twenty-two households in Linn and Johnson counties are on their way to getting clean solar energy for their homes.

Area homeowners and other property owners who attend the Solar Power Hour information sessions learn solar basics needed to make informed decisions about solar on their property. Schedules of upcoming Solar Power Hour educational webinars and a sign-up form for the program can be found at

“The City of Cedar Rapids is excited by the growing success of our third Grow Solar campaign. Many residents in Cedar Rapids are excited about the possibilities of renewable energy and lower energy bills,” said Eric Holthaus, sustainability coordinator for the City of Cedar Rapids. “Grow Solar helps us spread the word and let residents in Cedar Rapids, as well as throughout Linn and Johnson counties, decide if solar is right for them.”

The solar group buy and education program launched with below market rate pricing. By reaching this second benchmark, participants save an average of $450 off their final price. Additional cost savings are in store if the group buy collectively reaches 300 kW and 500 kW benchmarks, potentially bringing the average cost down by $975. Any savings thresholds reached after property owners sign on for solar are retroactively rebated to those owners. All of this is in addition to federal incentives that can cover a large portion of the cost of going solar.

In addition to the two counties, primary partners for the program include the City of Cedar Rapids, the City of Iowa City, Linn County Public Health, Green Iowa AmeriCorps--Cedar Rapids/Matthew 25, Green Iowa AmeriCorps--Iowa City, Johnson Clean Energy District, Johnson County Conservation, Linn Clean Energy District, and The Nature Conservancy in Iowa. The installer for the program is Eagle Point Solar. Grow Solar Linn + Johnson Counties is administered by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) at no cost to the counties or other program partners.

Only a few educational solar power hours remain.
