[ARCHIVED] Linn County Seeks Member for Civil Service Commission

BOARD and COMMISSION OPENINGS

Linn County is looking to fill a vacancy of an unexpired term on the Civil Service Commission for Deputy County Sheriffs. To comply with the state code requirement for gender balance, the vacancy should be filled by a woman. The term will expire June 30, 2025.

Iowa Code Chapter 341A directs the establishment of a Civil Service Commission for Deputy County Sheriffs. The commission’s primary responsibility is to participate in the employment interviews of deputy sheriff applicants. Commissions must be comprised of three members, and no more than two commissioners may be of the same political party. The Board of Supervisors appoints two members and the County Attorney appoints one member. Linn County’s current Civil Service Commission vacancy will be appointed by the Linn County Attorney. This is a voluntary appointment and commission members serve without compensation.

Requirements of Civil Service Commission Members

  • Appointees to the Civil Service Commission must be residents of Linn County for at least two years immediately preceding appointment.
  • The Civil Service Commission for Deputy County Sheriffs is required to meet at least annually, but may meet more frequently, such as for the testing of deputy sheriff candidates, or to interview promotional candidates.
  • Commissioners may not hold and elective or other appointive public office during their terms of appointment to the commission.

More information about the duties of the Commission are set forth in Iowa Code Chapter 341A.6

Apply online or contact the Linn County Attorney’s Office at 319-892-6350 or by email to request an application by mail.
