Description: Speakers, displays, information and advice on using natives in your landscape
We hear a lot about Monarch population decline, the dangers of overuse of chemicals and impaired water quality but many of us wonder if we can make a difference in our yards. The answer to that question is yes, there are simple ways to create habitat for butterflies and other wildlife, reduce maintenance, improve the environment and still have a beautiful yard.
Plant Iowa Native is an initiative of the Tallgrass Prairie Center at the University of Northern Iowa. It is collaboration between consumers, private industry, non-profit organizations, and government agencies for the purpose of promoting native Iowa plants. They are working to educate the public on the use of native plants in the landscape. On May 30 at Forever Green in Coralville the Tallgrass Prairie Center will have a Plant Iowa Native Event from 10:00-12:00. Speakers will talk about how you can incorporate native trees, shrubs grasses and flowers into your yard, and their benefits. There will be displays of native plants and seeds, as well as live butterflies in Forever Green’s butterfly house.

Rob Roman - Linn County Roadside Manager
Native prairie species add value and resilience to Iowa’s public roadside resource. Native species are adaptable and long-lived, they improve erosion control and provide valuable habitat, and yes, they can even improve safety along our roadways. Rob is the Roadside Vegetation Manager with the Linn County Secondary Road Department. Rob has 35 years of experience working with prairie management and Linn County has a prairie roadway demonstration project that is in its 44th growing season. Come and hear about the opportunities, successes, challenges and lessons learned when using and managing for natives along our roadways.
