The Linn County Board of Supervisors have approved revisions to our code of ordinances as it relates to construction codes in Linn County. The Linn County Building Division has worked with surrounding jurisdictions in an effort to gain consistency in Eastern Iowa as it pertains to building codes.
The international Building, Residential, Fire, Mechanical, and Uniformed Plumbing Codes have all been updated to the 2021 versions. Here are a few of the significant residential code changes that will apply to all construction moving forward.
- Radon testing is now required and shall be performed by the builder, a registered design professional, or an approved third party. Results are required to be submitted to the code official prior to the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy.
- Building Permit Fees are now based on valuations established by the International Code Council’s most current Building Valuation Data.
- Vapor barriers required under slabs on grade are now required to be a minimum of 10 mil thick.
- Where 4”x4” deck posts support guard rail loads, posts are no longer allowed to be notched at the connection to the supporting structure.
