The June 7, 2022 Primary election is rapidly approaching and Linn County Elections wants you to have the information you need in order to cast your vote. Here are the top 5 things to know about voting in the June 7 Primary:

1.    Redistricting and Your Polling Location

The recent redistricting of precincts in Linn County has resulted in additional precincts and redefined precinct boundaries. As a result, polling places for many voters have changed. Additionally, the Supervisor district for some voters has also changed. Linn County voters can find their polling location and district by using the Linn County Elections lookup tool.

2.    Absentee Voting Options

There are options available if you are unable to get to the polls on Election Day. Those options include:

  • Vote by Mail: Submit an Absentee Ballot Request form to the Auditor’s Office by 5 p.m. on May 23, 2022. Ballot request forms are available online, in the Penny Saver, and by calling the Auditor’s Office at 319-892-5300 option 1.
  • In-Person Early Voting: In-person early voting is available every day from May 18 through June 6 at the Linn County Elections Office at 935 2nd Street SW, Cedar Rapids.  Weekday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekend hours (including Memorial Day) are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4 is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • No Satellite Voting: Satellite locations require a petition to establish. No petitions were received for the June 7 Primary election.

3.    What’s on the Ballot

Linn County voters can view a sample ballot for the Primary election by entering their address into the Linn County Elections lookup tool. This tool can also show you the current elected officials for your area. Sample ballots are also available in the Auditor’s Office.

4.    How to Register to Vote

Linn County residents who need to register to vote or update their registration can do so in four basic ways:

  • Through the Iowa Department of Transportation when obtaining an Iowa driver’s license or non-driver ID

Election Day Registration:

  • If you are new to Linn County or missed the pre-registration deadline, it is still possible to register and vote on Election Day. You must register at your correct polling location. Visit the Election Day Registration webpage for more information.

In the State of Iowa, a voter must declare a political party (Democrat or Republican) in order to vote in the primary and can vote only in that party's primary election. If you are not registered to vote, or are currently registered as an Independent or No Party voter and want to vote in the Primary, you must register as a voter in the party.

5.    Voter ID is Required

Iowa law requires voters to show an ID when voting absentee in-person and at the polls on Election Day. Valid forms of ID are:

  • Iowa Voter Identification Card (must be signed)
  • Iowa Driver's License
  • Iowa Non-Operator ID
  • U.S. Military ID or Veteran ID
  • U.S. Passport
  • Tribal ID Card/Document

A voter without one of the above forms of ID may have their identity verified by another registered voter residing in the same precinct. The voter may also use Election Day Registration documents. Additional information is available at the Iowa Secretary of State's website.
