Criminal Charges Filed in Connection with Back-to-Back Homicides in January 2022

The Linn County Attorney’s Office, in cooperation with the Cedar Rapids Police Department, has filed criminal charges against Kazius Childress, 20, for killing Cordal Lewis on January 27, 2022, in the 300 block of 31st Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa.

The Linn County Attorney’s Office, in cooperation with the Cedar Rapids Police Department, has also filed criminal charges against Kazius Childress, 20, for killing Kavon Johnson on January 28, 2022, at Cedar Valley Park, 2200 Blakely Blvd. SE, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. 

Childress has been charged with Murder in the First Degree and Going Armed with Intent for the homicide of Cordal Lewis on January 27, 2022. Download a copy of the criminal complaint (PDF). The Linn County Attorney’s Office has been receiving continuous status updates from the Cedar Rapids Police Department and has been consulting with investigators throughout the course of this investigation, which has been ongoing since the homicides occurred in late January. The Cedar Rapids Police Department should be commended for their persistent efforts to solve these homicides.

The Linn County Attorney’s Office believes there are individuals that possess knowledge of facts and circumstances of both homicides and is encouraging those persons to come forward and to cooperate with the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

The Linn County Attorney's Office is committed to justice for the alleged victims and to ensuring a fair trial for the accused. It should be noted that a criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty at trial.
