Linn County Courthouse

Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks released the following statement after reviewing the findings of the Iowa Attorney General’s Office investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred August 30, 2022, during the early morning hours at the Inn Circle, 5560 6th St. SW in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The incident involved multiple law enforcement officers from the Cedar Rapids Police Department who were responding to a report of a domestic disturbance. Responding officers used force that resulted in the death of William Isaac Rich (Rich). The two officers involved in the direct confrontation with Rich were Sgt. Bryson Garringer and Investigator Chris Christy of the Cedar Rapids Police Department. The Iowa Attorney General’s Office investigation found the actions of the officers involved were entirely legally justified.
