In 2022, the Linn County Sustainability Department led important programs that continued Linn County’s focus on environmental sustainability, resource protection, and securing an environmentally just future for Linn County residents.
The department led the creation of Linn County’s first internal sustainability plan, developed with input from a 14-member steering committee representing a diverse selection of County departments. The plan sets goals for the three-year period of 2023-2025 and provides a roadmap for how County departments can better serve the Linn County community through actions that support a sustainable future.
The Sustainability & Resiliency Committee, comprised of volunteer Linn County residents representing industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, focused on updating the County’s annual greenhouse gas inventory and conducted community outreach to climate-vulnerable populations in Linn County to help improve disaster preparedness.
In partnership with Linn County Conservation, the Sustainability Department co-led a two-week backpacking trip for local high school students to the South San Juan Wilderness in Southwest Colorado to help empower the next generation of environmental leaders.
Also in 2022, Linn County continued its partnership with GreenIowa AmeriCorps by hosting six full-time members who helped engage the community in climate action events.
