The 2014 Preserve Iowa Summit will be held in Cedar Rapids, August 21 – 23. The Linn County Historic Preservation Commission is a key educational partner for this year’s Summit and will sponsor a limited number of scholarships for this statewide annual conference. The scholarships are available to Linn County residents; however, preference will be given to residents of Linn County residing in small cities and rural areas outside the Cedar Rapids incorporated area. Candidates for scholarships may include, but are not limited to: professionals and volunteers involved in historic preservation and commercial district revitalization; educational professionals (high school, middle school); members of organizations such as Farm Bureau, Legion, and 4H; local historical societies; economic development groups; Main Street Iowa members; local government officials.
The Preserve Iowa Summit will include classroom and mobile sessions that offer innovative, educational opportunities. The 2014 Summit will use Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities as a living laboratory to demonstrate successful Main Street and Preservation project approaches. Attendance for the Summit, held in various venues throughout Cedar Rapids and Linn County, is expected to be 400 individuals. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about preservation-based revitalization in our state and to promote networking and sharing around this important topic.
Sessions include:
Preserving Vanishing Resources: Linn County and Mt. Vernon; A Grave Matter: Restoring Your Community’s Pioneer Cemeteries; Managing a Substantial Historic Rehabilitation Project; Historic Theaters Rescue and Rehab; and a tour of the Lincoln Highway and the Mt. Vernon Main Street, among others.
Potential scholarship recipients should visit the Linn County website at www.linncounty.org/historic for a scholarship application. Scholarships to cover the full three-day registration fee of $155 will be limited.
Potential recipients must complete a scholarship application no later than June 10, 2014, and submit it to Joi Bergman at [email protected] or 935 2nd St. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
