Linn County Supervisor Linda Langston, through her role as president of the National Association of Counties (NACo), has been given the opportunity to award a presidential scholarship to a Linn County student. The Davenport Scholarship, funded by Mr. David Davenport, is a $2,500 award renewable for four years. This scholarship is available to any student residing in Linn County; however, only one student will be selected. Applications are due Friday, April 4, 2014.
The scholarship recipient will be selected based on a number of determinants as found in the NACo Presidential Scholarship application form available on the Linn County website www.linncounty.org. Deserving, well-rounded individuals with an interest in government are encouraged to apply. While GPA scores will be considered, recipients will not be selected based simply on a high GPA. A five-person selection committee will assist in determining the scholarship recipient.
“I truly feel that the best way to award the scholarship is to provide it to a deserving student in our county. I am proud to have raised my family, to live and to serve as an elected official in Linn County,” said Langston.
Applicant requirements are as follows:
• U.S. citizenship
• Minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
• Acceptance by an institution of higher learning
• Documentation of leadership skills in school and/or community
• Completion of scholarship application form
• Preparation of an essay as noted on the application
• Continued updates on college career
All materials must be submitted by Friday, April 4, 2014. Completed applications should be submitted to: Supervisor Linda Langston/NACo Scholarship, 935 2nd St. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
