April 10-16, 2016 is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The Linn County Attorney’s Office and its partners in the criminal justice community come together every year to advocate for crime victims and their loved ones through a series of events.

Opening Ceremonies were held April 10 at the Marion Police Department. Following the opening ceremony, family members of homicide and vehicular homicide victims placed crosses with their loved ones’ names on them in front of the Marion Police Department. The crosses will remain in place for the remainder of the week.

A candlelight vigil will take place Friday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Horizons – A Family Service Alliance, 819 5th St. SE in Cedar Rapids. Dr. Jim Coyle, a first responder for 33 years, will be the guest speaker, followed by candle lighting, music and a photo montage. Many families that have lost a loved one to homicide or vehicular homicide attend this event every year.

The week will conclude with the 10th annual Go the Distance for Crime Victims 5K Run/Walk. Registrations are accepted up until the start of the race. Registration is also available at Race Bag Pick-up on Friday, April 15 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
