All Linn County Sheriff’s Office Employees to Receive Two-Day Blue Courage Training
May 9, 2016
Linn County Sheriff’s Office personnel recently started participating in a two-day Blue Courage “The Heart and Mind of the Guardian” workshop designed to create a culture of respect and resilience in the law enforcement environment. It collectively builds the spirit of community engagement by increasing dedication, productivity, collaboration, and community trust and respect.
While the program was specifically developed for sworn law enforcement personnel, the projected benefits of the training have caused the Sheriff’s Office to provide this training to all employees, both sworn and civilian.
The workshops provide stress-resilience training designed to teach employees techniques to balance and control the mental, emotional and physiological aspects of stressful encounters on the job. Maintaining this balance helps law enforcement employees think rationally under stress, concentrate, and make appropriate decisions when seconds count.
Blue Courage highlights today’s law enforcement culture and builds emotional resiliency and hope and emphasizes the importance of health and wellness in the pursuit of positive community and relationship outcomes. The goal is improved job performance and effectiveness that results in a safer, more secure community, while reducing employee stress and frustration and in turn, helping employees live longer, healthier lives.
Two deputy sheriffs attended the weeklong Blue Courage Academy sponsored by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy where they received their train-the-trainer session in February and are responsible for delivering this training to Sheriff’s Office personnel.
The Blue Courage training program was brought to Iowa through a grant obtained by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. ILEA Assistant Director Kim Wadding may be contacted for additional information at [email protected] or 515-725-9602.
