[ARCHIVED] Changes to Election Law for Primary Elections

On April 25, Governor Branstad signed into law House File 2366. Among the numerous changes, two apply to the administration of the June 3 Primary Elections in Linn County:

1. The pre-registration deadline for primary elections has changed from ten to eleven days prior to the election. Due to this change, Auditor’s offices across the state are no longer required to be open on Saturday, the tenth day prior to the election. Auditor’s Offices will continue to be open for absentee voting on Saturday, the third day prior to the election. Effects of this change can be summarized as follows:

a. The new pre-registration deadline for this primary election is Friday, May 23.
b. The Linn County Auditor’s Office will be closed on Saturday, May 24.

2. Absentee voters in primary elections are no longer required to indicate their party affiliation on the affidavit envelope. However, they must still indicate their party affiliation on their absentee ballot request form. County Auditors may continue to use primary election affidavit envelopes containing the check boxes for party affiliation, but whether or not the boxes are checked is no longer cause to reject the ballot. In Linn County, the existing stock of primary election affidavit envelopes will be used for the remainder of this election.
