[ARCHIVED] Deadline to File Homestead Tax Credit and Military Property Tax Exemption is July 1

Linn County property owners are reminded that the deadline for applying for the 2014 Homestead Property Tax Credit and/or Military Property Tax Exemption is July 1, 2014.

Property owners that have an existing homestead credit or military exemption and have maintained their residency are not required to reapply – this is a one-time filing as long as they own and maintain the property as their permanent residence.


Residents outside Cedar Rapids

Linn County property owners outside the city limits of Cedar Rapids may apply in-person at the Linn County Assessor’s Office located on the second floor of the Jean Oxley Linn County Public Service Center at 935 2nd Street SW in Cedar Rapids between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.


Homestead Property Tax Credit – online form

Applicants may also download a pre-populated and fillable Homestead Property Tax Credit form from the Linn County Assessor’s website at www.linn.iowaassessors.com. This website is for Linn County property owners outside the city limits of Cedar Rapids.

• On the front page of the Assessor’s website, select Real Estate Search and enter the property address or GPN number of the property the applicant is applying for.
• If more than one property is listed, select the correct property from the generated list.
• On the left hand side under Linn County Assessor and then under Legal Description, is the Homestead line. Click on Application Form.
• Complete the form and mail it to the Linn County Assessor’s Office.


Military Property Tax Exemption – online form

Applications for the Military Property Tax Exemption can be made in-person as well or a request can be completed from the Linn County Assessor’s website at www.linn.iowaassessors.com. This website is for Linn County property owners outside the city limits of Cedar Rapids.
• On the Assessor’s website, select Links and then Homestead/Military Exemption Request Form
• Complete the form and mail it to the Linn County Assessor’s Office or email it to [email protected]

All applications mailed to the Assessor’s Office must have a U.S. Postal mark of July 1, 2014, or sooner, to be considered timely filed.

Veterans must have their DD 214 honorable discharge papers recorded before the application can be processed. DD214’s can be recorded at the Linn County Recorder’s Office, also located in the Jean Oxley Linn County Public Service Center.
