Rena Schulte: Assistant Linn County Attorney Rena Schulte was presented with the prestigious “Jennifer Clinton” Award during the opening ceremonies for Victim’s Rights Week on April 21st which was hosted by the Department of Corrections at the William Faches Center. This annual award is presented to the person or group that best exemplifies the high ideals and principles personified by former Assistant Linn County Jennifer Clinton as an advocate for victims of crime. Ms. Schulte was recognized for her dedicated efforts in organizing and giving a comprehensive presentation about the new domestic abuse laws and investigative techniques to local law enforcement agencies.

Lance Heeren: Assistant Linn County Attorney Lance Heeren was honored with an Award of
Appreciation from the Iowa County Attorneys Association on June 10th at their spring
conference in Okoboji, Iowa. The Association sought to formally recognize Lance for his
dedication to juvenile justice, his services to the Iowa County Attorneys Association and his
perseverance in restoring the independence of prosecutors in the pursuit of child safety in

Nick Maybanks: First Assistant Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks was presented with the
2013 Kathleen Opdebeeck Award on October 11th at the Child Protection Conference which was
hosted by the St. Luke’s Child Protection Center at Kirkwood College. This esteemed award was
established in 2008 in recognition of the longstanding work and dedication of Dr. Kathleen
Opdebeeck as medical director of the St. Luke’s Child Protection Center. The award is
presented to a professional who demonstrates outstanding achievement and exemplary service
in the protection of Iowa’s Children.

James Noonan, Chris Adcock and Rena Schulte: These three outstanding employees of the Linn County Attorney’s Office recently received the Linn County Customer Service Award for the exceptional service they provided to a victim of domestic abuse. Investigator James Noonan had met with a victim of domestic abuse to provide her with court documents when he noted what appeared to be bodily injuries to her face. He persuaded her to meet with one of our victim witness coordinators, Chris Adcock, and the two of them encouraged her to follow
through with the charge. They also helped arrange for her to obtain a medical exam during
which time the treating physician discovered the victim was suffering from a bowel adhesion
that could have proved fatal if timely medical treatment had not been provided. Rena Schulte
prosecuted the defendant and was able to obtain a substantial jail term for the offender. These
three employees showed great compassion and dedication in the assistance they provided this
crime victim and were recognized for their outstanding service by Linn County Attorney Jerry
Vander Sanden
