[ARCHIVED] Linn County assisting with storm debris clean-up

Linn County will be offering the following assistance to help residents of unincorporated areas and cities it contracts with that were hit hard by this week’s storms:

Waiving Permit Fees

Linn County will waive the applicable building department permit fees for the unincorporated areas in Linn County and the cities of Palo, Ely, Lisbon and Mt Vernon. Waiver of fees include fees for flood plain development permits, building permits (including electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits) and zoning verifications, through August 31, 2014. This waiver does not apply to building permit fees (including electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits) for repair work already begun without a permit prior to the June 29, 2014 storm.

All required permits will still be necessary in the repair or reconstruction of buildings and other structures damaged by this week’s storms. Linn County is simply waiving the fee for the required permits to assist residents impacted by the recent storms.

Collection of Yard Waste Storm Debris

Linn County Secondary Road crews will remove yard waste debris from this week’s storm in the communities of Toddville, Midway and Monroe Township during the week of July 21-25. Residents should place yard waste storm debris near the right-of-way line on their property for pick up by Linn County. Debris should be placed for collection by July 21.

Linn County Secondary Road crews will also remove yard waste storm debris from the community of Viola. Residents of Viola should take their yard waste debris from the recent storms to the collection point at the Viola school by July 21. Linn County will remove the yard waste from this central drop off point in Viola.

If you are a Linn County resident who has debris to deal with after the storms and do not live in Toddville, Midway, Viola or Monroe Township, yard waste can be taken to the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency at 2250 A Street SW, Cedar Rapids (Mount Trashmore location). That is where the Agency’s yard waste and compost operation is located. It can handle everything from large tree stumps and thick branches, to shrubs, grass and leaves. The yard waste disposal fee is $18 per ton with a $5 minimum. Call 319-398-5163 with any questions. Garbage is not accepted at the A Street facility. Use the C Street SW entrance. Drive slowly when entering and exiting.

Because of Governor Branstad’s disaster declaration for Linn County, yard waste debris can also be taken to 1954 County Home Road, Marion, where the landfill is located. If you have mixed debris, for example siding, shingles and yard waste, bring it to the County Home Road facility. Regular garbage fees apply.
