Linn County public budget forum is November 19

Linn County will hold its annual Public Budget Forum Thursday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. at the Linn County Public Service Center, 935 2nd St. SW in Cedar Rapids. The budget forum gives residents the opportunity to address the Board of Supervisors and provide comment on the development of Linn County’s fiscal year 2017 budget.

Linn County’s fiscal 2017 budget will be developed over the next three months during a series of public meetings between the Linn County Board of Supervisors, other Linn County elected officials and department heads. The meeting dates and times will be posted on Linn County’s website www.linncounty.org. Fiscal year 2017 begins July 1, 2016 and ends June 30, 2017.

Iowa County officials to vote on legislative priorities

More than 800 county officials from across the state, including Linn County officials, are in Cedar Rapids this week for an educational conference sponsored by the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC). ISAC’s legislative priorities will be debated and approved at the conference. The top priorities package recommended by the ISAC Board of Directors include: Delinquent Court Debt, Distracted Driving, E911 Funding, Food Safety, and Mental Health and Disability Services. The priorities are the basis for ISAC’s lobbying efforts during the upcoming legislative session.

Linn County Recorder Joan McCalmant will be introduced as the 2016 incoming president of ISAC. She will be officially sworn into this leadership role during ISAC’s January board meeting.

Linn County contributes funding for emergency overflow beds this winter

The Linn County Board of Supervisors voted to contribute $2,000 toward temporary staffing for the winter shelter plan developed by the Linn County Continuum of Care for emergency overflow beds for area homeless shelters. The Linn County Continuum of Care, which includes Linn County staff and local agencies serving the homeless, has been working since August to coordinate a plan to ensure area homeless programs are able to assist those in need of shelter during severe winter conditions. The funding is from an account to be used for health care for the homeless activities.

Recognition event at Cedar Rapids Schools

Options of Linn County recognized by Cedar Rapids Schools for volunteer contributions

The Cedar Rapids Community School District celebrated the volunteer contributions of nearly 100 businesses and organizations with a "Galaxy of Stars" recognition on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Options of Linn County was recognized for volunteer contributions at Kenwood and Taylor Elementary Schools during the 2014-15 school year. The goal of each collaboration is to directly and positively strengthen the learning environment for students.

Linn County offices closed for Thanksgiving holiday

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, Linn County governmental offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27.
The following services will continue to operate:

  • Juvenile Detention and Diversion Services
  • Linn County LIFTS will be closed Nov. 26 but will operate reduced routes on Friday, Nov. 27.
  • The Sheriff’s Office will be closed; however, continuous operations will be available for routine and emergency responses. This includes the Patrol Division, Communications Division and the Correctional Center. In an emergency, always dial 911.
