Board of Supervisors Approve Fiscal Year 2023 Budget With No Increase in Levy Rate

At its March 23 meeting, the Linn County Board of Supervisors approved a $154.8 million balanced budget for fiscal year 2023 following two public hearings. The newly approved budget lowers the countywide levy (property tax) rate to $5.85 per $1,000 of taxable value. This lower rate is due to the passage of Senate File 619 that moved Mental Health & Disability Services (MHDS) funding from property tax to State appropriation. The rural levy rate, which is in addition to the countywide levy rate for residents who live in unincorporated Linn County, remains the same as fiscal year 2022 at $2.71 and includes a reduction of one dollar for rural residents from the Local Option Sales Tax allocation. This reduction is a result of 25 percent of the Local Option Sales Tax revenue that provides property tax relief in the unincorporated areas.

Linn County Sheriff's Office Implements Medical Priority Dispatch System

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is excited to announce the implementation of the Medical Priority Dispatch System™ (MPDS) to better serve residents of Linn County.

With this new system, Communications Operators will follow nationally recognized standards and research-based protocols to identify life-threatening situations and to safely prioritize calls for response. The protocols guide Communications Operators through a series of questions to ask callers in order to identify the problems so they can send the correct type of help, provide first responders with accurate information so they can more effectively give care once on the scene, and so they can provide lifesaving and safety instructions to callers and patients before responders arrive.

COVID-19 Updates

Effective April 1, 2022, Linn County Public Health will end reporting COVID-19 metrics and case data at the county level on its website but will continue to report the community COVID-19 level as provided by the CDC and share links for resources. At this time, case data is still available on the Iowa Department of Public Health website.

Linn County Public Health, in partnership with Coll Consulting, has produced a COVID-19 After Action Report to summarize local pandemic response and to document key takeaways. While the pandemic is not over, the report covers a 16-month period from January 2020 through June 2021 when the first COVID-19 cases began to spread in the United States to when vaccines were becoming more readily available throughout the country.
