May is Mental Health Awareness Month May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health. An increasing number of people are starting to see mental health for what it is: one important component of our overall health and well-being, just like our physical health. Now is the time to check into resources for yourself or for anyone you know who may be struggling. Help is available.

Mental Health Access Center Releases FY23 Third Quarter Report Linn County’s Mental Health Access Center, which recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, served 198 people who walked in seeking help in between January 1 and March 31, 2022. Forty-two people were helped through law enforcement referrals. This is 42 people who would have otherwise been taken to jail or the emergency room for intoxication, suicidal thoughts, or other mental health emergencies. During post-discharge follow-up, 96 percent of patients reported the Mental Health Access staff were caring and assisted with creating strong discharge plans. During the Access Center’s first year of service, staff helped 532 walk-in patients. View the FY22 Q3 report.

May is Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month Linn County Public Health wants you to know the ABC's of skin cancer:
- Asymmetrical: Does the mole or spot have an irregular shape with two parts that look very different?
- Border: Is the border irregular or jagged?
- Color: Is the color uneven?
- Diameter: Is the mole or spot larger than the size of a pea?
- Evolving: Has the mole or spot changed during the past few weeks or months? If it looks weird, get it checked out!
Some people are at higher risk of skin cancer than others, but anyone can get it. The most preventable cause of skin cancer is overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Learn more.

First Public Meeting Scheduled for Review of Duane Arnold Solar Application Linn County announces that a date is now scheduled for the Technical Review Committee (TRC) meeting for review of the Duane Arnold Solar I and II utility-scale solar application projects. The TRC meeting is the first public meeting in a series of public meetings as part of the application review process. The TRC meeting is open to the public and residents can attend in person or virtually; however, as is the case with all Technical Review Committee meetings, no public comments will be taken. This meeting is for staff to review the project with the applicant. Learn more about the review process.

Join Linn County Historic Preservation Commission to Celebrate Achievements in Preservation The Linn County Historic Preservation Commission invites you to join them Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wickiup Hill Learning Center as they celebrate Linn County’s recent preservation achievements as part of National Preservation Month. This free event will include discussion about the six sites at the Wickiup Hill Natural Area that were recently added to the National Register of Historic Places and the process of placing items on the National Register, as well as past Historic Preservation Grant recipient projects funded by Linn County. The event will conclude with a preservation walk around the Wickiup Hill Natural Area.

74 Pounds of Prescription Medication Collected During Rx Take Back Day The Linn County Sheriff’s Office collected 41 lbs. of medications at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office site and 33 lbs. at the Springville Fire Station during the DEA National Drug Take Back Event on April 30. Over the last 6 months, the Sheriff’s Office has collected a total of 498 lbs. of unwanted and unused prescription medicine. If you missed Saturday’s event, please take advantage of the prescription drug drop boxes at your local Sheriff’s Office or Police Department to get rid of your unwanted prescription medicine.

Board of Supervisors Meeting Recap The following is a recap from the Linn County Board of Supervisors meetings the week of April 29-May 9, 2022. The Board of Supervisors:
- Proclaimed May 2022 Mental Health Month in Linn County
- Proclaimed may 2022 Building Safety Month in Linn County
- Met with and received updates from the following Elected Officials and offices: Attorney Nick Maybanks, Auditor’s Office, Sheriff Brian Gardner, Treasurer Sharon Gonzalez
- Received a presentation by Linn County Main Streets
- Held a public hearing and first and second consideration of an ordinance amending the Code of Ordinances, Linn County, Iowa by amending provisions in Chapter 10, Article III Relating to Air Quality
- Discussed a vacancy form requesting two Senior Public Health Nurses for the Public Health Clinical Branch
- Discussed and authorized Chair to sign Video Surveillance Work Request Form to include Foundation 2 and Unity Point staff access to security cameras at Mental Health Access Center
- Received an update on the Linn County Mental Health Access Center from the Access Center director
- Appointed Darrin Gage as interim Facilities Director
- Approved a resolution awarding a contract for a bridge deck overlay on Mount Vernon Road over Wanatee Creek in section 29-83-6 (Bridge #641), to PCIROADS, LLC, in the amount of $296,540.77
- Approved a resolution awarding a contract for a bridge deck overlay on Mount Vernon Road over Indian Creek in section 29-83-6 (Bridge #640), to PCIROADS, LLC, in the amount of $448,965.16
- Approved a resolution awarding a contract for a grading project on Jordans Grove Road from County Home Road to Waubeek Road , to Boomerang Corp, in the amount of $1,959,886
- Approved a resolution granting permission to the CRANDIC Racing Club to use Sutliff Road in Linn County for bicycle time trials on May 4, June 1, July 6, and August 3, 2022. The County Engineer’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, and Risk Management have discussed and collected proper insurance and hold harmless agreements.
- Approved a resolution for a final plat for Cedar Valley Humane Society First Addition
- Authorized Chair to sign the 22AHP16 Emergency Response Multi-Year Program – COVID-19 Confinement contract between Iowa Department of Public Health and Linn County Board of Supervisors and Linn County Public Health to establish and implement diagnostic, screening, and testing programs for youth residing at the Juvenile Detention Center effective March 28, 2022 through December 31, 2022 with an amount not to exceed $81,713
- Authorized Chair to sign the Fifth Amendment to the Tracking, Monitoring, and Intervention Contract between Juvenile Court Services for the 6th Judicial District of Iowa, the Iowa Department of Human Services, and Linn County Board of Supervisors to provide Community Based services through Juvenile Detention & Diversion Services effective July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023 with an amount not to exceed $990,283
- Authorized Chair to sign the Electronic Monitoring Agreement between Juvenile Court Services for the 6th Judicial District of Iowa and Linn County Board of Supervisors to provide ankle monitor services through Juvenile Detention & Diversion Services effective July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023 at the billable rate of $8.50/day
- Authorized Chair to sign the first amendment to the SOLO In-Home Day Treatment Service Contract between Juvenile Court Services for the 6th Judicial District of Iowa and Linn County Board of Supervisors to provide Community Based services through Juvenile Detention & Diversion Services effective July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023 with an amount not to exceed $414,739
- Authorized Chair to sign a renewal agreement between Linn County and the Juvenile Detention Medical Director effective July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023 for an amount of $28,138
- Authorized Chair to sign an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant agreement between Linn County and NewBo City Market for the Expanding the Hatchery for Entrepreneurship Equity Project in the amount of $100,000
- Authorized Chair to sign an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) sub-award agreement between Linn County and Boys & Girls Clubs of Cedar Rapids for the Unlocking the Future Project in the amount of $750,500
- Authorized Chair to sign an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) sub-award agreement between Linn County and Feed Iowa First for the Expanding Land Access & Increasing Local Food Production in the amount of $100,000
- Authorized Chair to sign “Adopt-A-Roadside” for American Heritage Girls Troop to adopt N 10th Street from County Home Road to Shamrock Woods

- Authorized Chair to sign FY23 Decat Contract # DCAT4-19-066, 7th amendment and renewal, in the amount of $20,000, between the Linn County Board of Supervisors and the Department of Human Services
