Black Hawk County and Linn County Conservation to Receive $3.5 Million in Destination Iowa Funding

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) awarded $3.5 million jointly to Black Hawk and Linn County Conservation to pave 16 miles of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail. This project would complete the original 52-mile trail, connecting the Waterloo/Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids metropolitan areas entirely by the trail.

Fully paving and completing the Cedar Valley Nature Trail has been a goal across numerous urban and rural communities since the mid-1980s. The trail, through 11 cities and five counties in the region, makes it a popular recreational attraction in the state of Iowa. The Cedar Valley Nature trail is free for the public to utilize for non-motorized recreation and serving as the backbone trail for many existing and planned connecting trails. This grant award allows the final trail hard surfacing connection to be made all at once.

Linn County Employee Recognized for Helping to Close Loophole in Criminal Justice System

Chief Victim Witness Coordinator and Community Liaison for the Linn County Attorney's Office Anastasia Basquin received the Exemplary Service Award from the Linn County Board of Supervisors during Linn County’s quarterly employee recognition breakfast for her work in finding and helping to close a loophole in the criminal justice system. The loophole allowed persons arrested for the crime of sexual abuse to post bond before a magistrate had an opportunity to enter a No-Contact Order for the protection of the alleged victim. When Basquin discovered this loophole, she began advocating for change, which ultimately led to Governor Reynolds signing into law HF2079 on May 2, 2022.
