Linn County Historic Preservation Commission Preservation Grant Window Now Open

The Linn County Historic Preservation Commission is now accepting grant applications from non-profit organizations for its annual Historic Preservation Grant Program.

Projects must be designed for the purpose of collecting or preserving historical materials, artifacts, places, or structures, including National Register of Historic Places nominations; maintaining a historical library or collection; conducting historical studies or research; issuing educational publications (not membership newsletters); providing public lectures of historical interest; or otherwise disseminating a knowledge of the history of the area to the general public.

Application information is available on Linn County’s website. There is $28,800 in grant funding available this year. Completed applications are due March 31, 2023, by 5 p.m. This is a competitive grant program.

Linn County to Hold Public Hearing March 1 on Maximum Property Tax Levy for Fiscal Year 2024

The Linn County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on March 1, 2023, at 10 a.m. to set the total maximum property tax levy for the fiscal year 2024 budget. The public hearing will be held at the Linn County Public Service Center, 935 2nd St. SW in Cedar Rapids. At the public hearing any resident or taxpayer may present objections to, or arguments in favor of, the proposed tax levy.

After adoption of the proposed tax levy, the Board of Supervisors will publish notice and hold a final public hearing in March to adopt the County’s FY24 budget.

Secondary Roads Releases Maintenance and Five Year Construction Plan

Linn County Secondary Road Department Releases 2023 Maintenance Plan and Five-Year Construction Plan

The Linn County Secondary Road Department has released its maintenance plan for 2023 and the five-year construction plan for fiscal years 2024-2028. The plans outline the department’s focus on repairing and rebuilding bridges, maintaining the condition of the paved road network, improving the condition of the County’s 765+ miles of rock roads, performing preventative maintenance, and how projects are prioritized. Secondary Road Department staff present a five-year plan to the Board of Supervisors annually, per Iowa Code.

Second Installment of Property Taxes Due March 31

The second installment of property and mobile home taxes in Linn County is due by March 31, 2023. Property taxes must be paid no later than March 31, 2023, to avoid late fees of 1.5% beginning April 1.

Linn County Secondary Road Department Announces Updates to Dust Control Program

In 2023, the only dust control available through Linn County will be chip seal or seal coat. Calcium chloride and oil will no longer be an option.

Property owners will now contact a local contractor and choose their dust control of choice instead of coming to or contacting the Engineer’s Office for dust control. A list of local contractors is available on the Secondary Road Department’s website. The property owner or applicant will obtain the dust control permit for $50 through the contractor. The contractor will collect the permits and fee and provide to the County at the end of the sign-up period.
