Linn County minimum wage increase takes effect Jan. 1


The minimum wage increase for Linn County approved by the Linn County Board of Supervisors will take effect Jan. 1, 2017, bringing the minimum wage to $8.25 per hour. The Board of Supervisors in September approved an ordinance to increase the minimum wage in Linn County by $1 per year for three years beginning in 2017.

The ordinance will apply within the unincorporated areas of Linn County, Iowa and within any city or portion of any city within Linn County that does not enact a conflicting ordinance.

Linn County receives Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for 21st consecutive year


Linn County has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for the 21st consecutive year. The award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and reflects the commitment of the Linn County governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

To receive the award, Linn County had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.

According to the GFOA, award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

Linn County FY18 budget planning underway


Planning for Linn County’s fiscal year 2018 (FY18) budget is underway. The FY18 budget is developed during a three-month process between November and February that includes more than 25 public meetings between the Linn County Board of Supervisors, other Linn County elected officials and department heads. All meetings are held at the Linn County Public Service Center, 935 2nd St. SW in Cedar Rapids.

A budget calendar for the entire FY18 budget process is posted on the Linn County website; however the dates are subject to change so please check the Agendas & Minutes section on Linn County’s website 24 hours in advance for the most up-to-date information or sign-up to receive email and/or text notification  of Board of Supervisors meetings and agendas.

Fiscal year 2018 begins July 1, 2017 and ends June 30, 2018.

Linn County offices closed for New Year’s holiday


Most Linn County governmental offices will be closed Friday, Dec. 30 and Monday, Jan. 2. for the New Year’s holiday.

The following services will continue to operate:

  • Juvenile Detention and Diversion Services
  • Linn County LIFTS will be running reduced routes on December 30. 
  • The Sheriff’s Office will be closed; however, continuous operations will be available for routine and emergency responses. This includes the Patrol Division, Communications Division and the Correctional Center. In an emergency, always dial 911.
