One of the most versatile and oldest lures in the world is a fly or jig. We invite you to come out and try your hand at tying. Stop out and tie a few and take half a dozen home with you! It isn’t complicated – but there is a special thrill involved with catching a fish on a jig you tie yourself.

Don is a retired biology major, who has been chasing mussels since he took a canoe trip with a mussel biologist in 2016. That trip started an interest which has led Don to learn more about mussels through mussel surveys and more. As a serious amateur photographer and excited citizen scientist - Don has been recording threatened, endangered and unusual wildlife and more. We will learn and experience what mussel surveys have revealed and what the future of mussels looks like in Iowa and the region. Hands on presentation with shells and much more!

Let’s Build Snowshoes! Linn County Conservation will offer the opportunity for you to build a pair of traditional snowshoes led by Naturalist Chuck Ungs. You can use these sets for hiking, decorations, or unique gifts. Participants must register on-line and pay the $10 registration fee by November 30 at 4 p.m. to hold a spot in the course. The reminder is due by check made out to Linn County Treasurer prior to the 4 PM deadline on Dec. 6, so we can order the kits. The remaining cost is $225 per kit. The $235 total class fee includes the cost of a snowshoe kit, a binding set and varnish for each participant.

Let's get extra festive this year and add some holiday cheer to our trails at Wickiup! We will make tree cookie and twig ornaments, some to keep, and some to hang on our trees. We provide materials. Sip some hot chocolate, listen to music, and enjoy a quiet creative time with others. For all ages. Cost $5/person.

Bring the kids to the backwater area of Pinicon Ridge Park to learn the fine points of ice fishing. Participants will practice jigging with an ice fishing rod, learn how a depth finder works, and attempt to view fish from an ice shack. The North Linn Fish and Game Club co-sponsors this clinic. Program is free. Register to ensure we have some free give-aways for your kiddos!
